Scott Cooper

Scott Cooper

Scott Cooper was born in Nashville, Tennessee to Evangelical Christian parents. His family moved frequently during his youth, mostly in the Midwestern United States. Church life was a point of constancy for his family and played a prominent role in his formative years and quite possibly fostered his interested in languages, cultures, history and historical imagery. Though he no longer subscribes to any religion or faith, this early influence in his life has helped to cultivate a deep fascination with mythology, mysticism, fables and traditional stories and their appearance in art. He has a great appreciation for how these fantastic and allegorical storytelling elements communicate the human experience in sometimes simple depictions often expressed in elaborate or delicate ways in and on precious materials and mediums. All of these components are common and often at play in his own work. Cooper attended 2 years of a 4 year BFA program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City but left school due to lack of funding. He has lived in Paris, France and Florence, Italy and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
